CHAS | The Contractors Health and Assessment Scheme 01733 459978

CHAS or in its full title The Contractors Health and Assessment Scheme, is an accreditation scheme for companies working mainly in the private sector.

The scheme was setup to save companies having to supply lots of documentation to Merton Councilso that they could do work for them. The scheme was so successful that it was rolled out to other councils.

So why do you need it ?
Well the answer is fairly simple, councils and other organisations want their suppliers to be of a certain standard, and CHAS is one of the ways of making sure of that.

So The Contractors health and assessment scheme may be good for your company.

Here at iwantchas we help people get CHAS qualified. You can go through the process yourself but it can take ages if you don’t have the right documentation and in not right form for the acreditiors. We know of many companies that have done it them selves, but it took two weeks to do. I suspect that you have better things to get on with.

So what to do next is, give us a ring on 01733 459978. We can then explain to you what happens and what, if anything we need from you.

CHAS accreditation fee

chas accreditation fee
One question that gets asked a lot is ‘how much is chas?’ and why is there a chas accreditation fee? the answer is not one figure.Â
So what is the answer?
CHAS falls into two basic camps, 5 or less employees and 5+ employees. As you would expect more documentation is needed for a larger company.Â
The next consideration is whether you have all the documentation. Meaning if you have been through health safety training for your company, you may have all the documents already. But a lot of companies dont and this is where they come unstuck.
That’s why you see companies like ours and others helping you get Chas accreditation and why you are wondering about the  chas accreditation fee
The hard work is getting the form filled in correctly first time and to the degree that keeps the chas governing body happy. We have heard of some compaines doing it themselves and taking 2 weeks to get everything in place. Surely you would agree that this is waste of your time and efforts.Â
The form filing is different every time because not every company is the same.

The CHAS governing body charge for the certificate is £160 + vat for 5+ and £90 + vat for 5 and less. The certificate you have to pay for, and this has to be paid to the governing body directly.

I want chas charge to help get you through the process. The charges do vary because of size of company. We do operate a straight fee, meaning there are no hidden fees. We take an initial payment deposit to start the process and the rest when the work is done.

I wont go on about the benefits of being Chas accredited, they are numerous, but if you are missing out on work or perhaps want your company to the next step, then CHAS registration is a option you should strongly consider.

CHAS – The Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme

Below is an extraction from one of the CHAS Providerson we use. Sphere are just one the companies that help people get CHAS ACCREDITED  & CHAS REGISTERED

Pre-Qualification & Supplier Questionnaires

Many organisation now use PQQ’s to verify and evaluate their suppliers prior to starting any project. This can seem a daunting process for many SME’s but really is not that  difficult to achieve. Health and safety like many other disciplines has its own language which is not readily recognisable after all who would call a computer, display screen equipment.

Sphere RHSM has lots of experience in all major forms of PQQ and supplier questionnaires, these include:

  • National Brtiannia Safe Contractor
  • CHAS & CHAS application
  • Constructionline
  • Achilles
  • UVDB
Along with major PQQ Sphere RHSM has dealt with company specific supplier questionnaires such as:
  • Kier
  • Wilmott Dixon
  • Kanvas
  • Local Authority—Cambridgeshire & Fenland
Case Study 1:
A construction company was having problems in fulfilling a PQQ’s supplied by Safe Contractor, Sphere RHSM took over this functions and provided the following:
  • Gap analysis to specify what was required and by when
  • Completed the health and safety documentation
  • Scheduled in the training required
  • Provided email feedback to Safe Contractor
  • The company received CHAS Registration & Safe Contractor approval within 6 weeks of Sphere being appointed.
Case Study 2:
An electrical company wanted CHAS accreditation so as to quote for local authority projects, using the  system identified in case study 1. Sphere RHSM successfully gained accreditation for the company, this resulted in the company being able to quote on a £300,000 project.

Builder’s Profile and CHAS link up to help eradicate PQQ duplication

26 November, 2009 | By Rhiannon Hoyle
Further progress is being made in the standardisation of pre-qualification systems after the Builder’s Profile this week announced a new link up with the Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme.

The move, announced at the National Specialist Contractors Council’s annual lunch, will allow contractors and clients registered with the Builder’s Profile to verify the health and safety details of their suppliers registered with CHAS.

The Builder’s Profile said it hoped the new relationship would “help to rationalise the multitude of systems in the construction industry”.

It added: “By accepting a company’s pre-qualification information via the Builder’s Profile, buyers can now go straight to the records of their suppliers on the CHAS database at the touch of a button.

“The Builder’s Profile has also been extended to include all the CHAS questions and CHAS will now accept the Builder’s Profile as an application for assessment.”

The announcement follows the six-month anniversary of Safety Schemes in Procurement, an umbrella organisation set up to facilitate mutual recognition between health and safety PQQs, of which CHAS is a member.

The progress in improving the industry’s pre-qualifications systems has been backed by the Health and Safety Executive, which hopes that cutting “the bureaucracy” of PQQs will allow firms time to give greater focus to health and safety issues on individual projects.

NSCC chief executive Suzannah Nichol welcomed the link up between CHAS and the Builder’s Profile.

She said: “Some specialist contractors are completing more than 100 bespoke pre-qualification questionnaires every year, all requesting essentially the same information.

“Mutual recognition between existing pre-qualification schemes is the key objective of the SSIP Forum and we are delighted to support that.”

Contractors across the industry are being urged to get involved in the SSIP Forum, with smaller firms in particular being told the initiative could open the door for them to tender for a much wider range of work.

HSE chief construction inspector Philip White last month said the SSIP initiative was “an opportunity we must not lose”.

The scheme was launched online in May and is an agreement between assessment schemes, trade federations representing both clients and suppliers, and the HSE, to simplify the prequalification stage of procurement, reduce duplication and improve standards of health and safety in the industry.
